Dr. Herndon

Dr. Gregory Herndon is the head of the surgery department here at Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island. Dr. Herndon began his academic career at North Carolina State University where he was recognized his last two years for academic achievement.

He went on to attend the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated with honors and was inducted into the Veterinary Honor Society, Phi Zeta in 1996. He continued his training by pursuing a small animal internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. From there he return to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine to complete a Small Animal Surgical Residency where his interest in thoracic, oncological and orthopedic surgery developed. During his residency he pursued research in External Skeletal fixators as it related to the strength of acrylic columns used in external skeletal fixator as well as research comparing the outcomes of medical versus surgical management in dogs with aortic Stenosis. During his time at Tennessee he received the Resident Teaching Award in 2000, presented several lectures at national and local level on External Skeletal Fixator, Aortic Stenosis treatment options, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, Gastric Dilatation Vovulus, Chronic Ear Disease in Dogs and Cats and Orthopedic diseases in juvenile dogs.

Upon his completion of his residency he has worked in a referral only private practice setting in Ohio and then spent four years in a busy private practice in Northern California.  During his time in California he became licensed to perform Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) for cranial cruciate ligament tears.  In January of 2006 he decided to move back to the east coast and join the Veterinary Medical Center team.  His surgical interests include surgical oncology, soft tissue surgery, orthopedics as well as neurosurgery.
