Dr. Freilicher

The Veterinary Medical Center is the only specialty hospital on Long Island with an exclusively Avian and Exotic practitioner, board-certified in Avian Medicine.  Dr. Elisabeth Simone-Freilicher has completed advanced training in rabbit/rodent dentistry, avian medicine and surgery (including salpingectomy and endoscopy), medical and surgical treatment of ferret adrenal disease and insulinomas, and reptile medicine and surgery.  Day, evening or weekend appointments are available.  Dr. Freilicher is available by appointment for either consultation or referral of avian and exotic cases, as well as for primary care and emergencies.

Dr. Freilicher is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University, and has over 15 years experience in pet bird biology, husbandry, behavior, and medicine. As a veterinary student, she actively participated in research and coursework in avian and exotic medicine (including pet fish medicine), and was honored with the Senior Clinical Award for Outstanding Study of Avian Medicine.

After completing an internship in Avian and Exotics medicine, Dr. Freilicher was asked to stay on at that facility as their first Avian and Exotic resident. With her residency and the rigorous ABVP board-certification process now completed, Dr. Freilicher has been completing writing assignments for Critters USA and Veterinary Practice News, as well as peer-reviewed case reports accepted by the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Freilicher is proud to be trusted as the official veterinarian of Monty’s Place Chinchilla Refuge and Rescue, as well as one of the veterinarians entrusted with the care of animals from Angel’s Gate, Parrot Rescue, and Second Chance Wildlife Refuge.  Dr. Freilicher is actively involved with numerous local animal clubs and groups, frequently providing educational lectures at both meetings and special events.  She has provided staff educational training and client handouts to local pet stores, in order to help make good care information more accessible to pet owners.  She strongly believes that the better educated the pet owner is, the better care the pet receives, preventing many unnecessary medical conditions.

Dr. Freilicher is delighted to be a part of the medical team at Veterinary Medical Center whose doctors practice the highest standards of medicine, and whose caring staff is focused on the comforts and needs of our patients. Our patients receive 24-hour care, with a doctor on the premises day and night. If we can be of any assistance with your avian and exotic patients, please do not hesitate to call.
